Elementary 1 has settled in very well and it has been a pleasure to observe how interested the children are in so many different topics.

This term's project is about a "journey through Asia". In the first two weeks as part of this project Elementary 1 has learnt about galaxies, the planets of our solar system, how life has evolved on planet Earth following the "big bang" and the layers of the Earth.

The children loved performing the "planet dance" dressed up wearing different scarves corresponding to the colours of the planets. They were keen on learning about the features of many of these planets.

Another great hit was studying volcanoes and the names of the parts of a volcano such as crater, vent, magma and lava. A few of the older Elementary 1 children decided to create their own "parts of a volcano" booklet which linked creativity to writing and which also linked the afternoon project to our morning work cycle. All children loved watching the Volcano science experiment and had the opportunity to try it out themselves over the next few days.

Another great hit was learning about the layers of the Earth-the inner core, the outer core, the mantle and the crust- and all children were very excited making their own plasticine model.

The next step will now be to learn the names of all seven continents and the the names of the oceans and then we will have a special focus on Asia, learning about different habitats, animals that live in these habitats and plants that grow there. This will be a direct link to the science Montessori Curriculum for all children as well as the National Curriculum for the older ones and the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) for the younger ones.

In Geography we will study different countries, their location on the map of Asia, flags and how people may live differently in other parts of the world. We will be using Montessori materials such as the Sandpaper Globe, the Coloured Globe and the Continent Puzzle Map of the World.

As part of history we will learn about Chinese emperors and famous historic buildings such as the Chinese Great Wall and the Indian Taj Mahal. The children's learning and new discoveries will be linked to a trip to the Victoria & Albert Museum where the children will attend an age appropriate workshop about special old Chinese, Indian and Japanese objects. We will also learn about the race to space focusing on the first man in space and the first man on the moon. A trip to the Science Museum in November will give the children the opportunity to attend a great workshop about the first man in space Yuri Gagarin.

Subjects such as Art and Design, Design Technology, Music, Dance, Drama, etc. will all be linked to the project.

In computing (used to be called ICT) the children will learn the names and purpose of different parts of a computer and about using technology purposefully to create and organise digital content. These lessons as all lessons in all subjects will be very hands on and playful.

As part of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) and SMSC Development (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development) Elementary 1 will celebrate and learn about different festivals and celebrations from around the world such as Rosh Hashanah, Al-Hijra, Diwali, Christmas, Guy Fawkes, St. Andrew's Day, World Food Day, United Nations Day, etc.

We are looking forward to a fun term with lots of learning!
