Primary Summer Term 2013
Welcome back to another term!I hope you all had a fun and relaxing Easter break.
My name is Miss Marie and I am the Primary class teacher. Miss Kate will be teaching with me three days a week.
A special welcome to the new members of our class: Zachary, Freddie, Joel, Zain, Joseph and Fidel who has come all the way from Australia!
We have a very busy term ahead of us in all areas of the curriculum.
Our eagerly anticipated project is ‘The Physical Environment of Planet Earth’ where we will focus on all physical elements of the earth such as plate tectonics and continental drift, the formations of volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, rivers and lakes as well as the water cycle.
The second half of the term will consist of Cartography: mapping skills, lines of longitude and latitude, atlas work and climate zones. The children will get to put their orienteering skills into practice when they visit Hampstead Heath on the 20th of June. Art and Design technology will be linked to our project as usual.
In science we will be studying world habitats in conjunction with our ‘Spirit of the Wild’ animal week (second week of term) during which we will have amazing animals visiting the school on Thursday, 25th April. Another science project this term will be the study of rocks and the rock cycle followed by learning about teeth and eating.
For the first half of term in PSHE (Physical Social and Health Education) we will focus on moral dilemmas, self-esteem, why we need rules, anti- bullying and healthy eating. The children will do a presentation on Vesak (Buddha day) before half term as this terms class festival. The second half of term will cover topics such as World Environment day and the importance of recycling as well as keeping safe and road safety.
For music we will continue working with Miss Susan, our music teacher and Miss Lisa for dance every Tuesday afternoon. The children will have ICT with Miss Gilly on Thursday mornings. Mr Sam will join us in the park on Wednesday afternoons for gym, let’s be hopeful of some summer sunshine!
I wish to remind you to ensure that your child has a school cap/hat with your child’s name every day in school. The children won´t be able to go outside without a hat/cap. On gym and trip days your child must also bring a rain coat and a bottle of water. If your child is wearing their sports outfit already in the morning please make sure that he/she wears a pair of outdoor shoes on arrival and brings the pair of sports shoes in an extra bag.
I am looking forward to our exciting residential trip to the PGL centre in Merchants Hill on the 5thto the 7th of June. Let’s begin the count down to 3 fun filled days! On the 24th of June we will be visiting the Handel House Museum to show an appreciation for classical music which we will also be learning about this term. This 18th century house is where composer George Frideric Handel lived for 36 years. If you would like to come along on one of our trips and help please let me know at the beginning of term.
If you would like your child to have a snack in school you are more than welcome, but please ensure that all snacks need to be healthy (e.g. fruit, vegetables, sandwich, etc.). Please no nuts and no chocolate!
Homework will be issued on Thursday afternoons and returned the following Tuesday. This will usually consist of Project related research and written work, times tables and spellings. Please ensure that your child brings their reading bags with their reading book and the reading record sheets.
On Tuesday the 23rd of April we will be holding our “meet your teacher” afternoon at the Junior school. Primary parents are scheduled to visit the Primary classroom at 4:15 pm and this afternoon is recommended for “old” as well as “new” parents. Children will be looked after during that session so you won´t have to worry about childcare. If you are attending this session you won´t have to pick up your child at 3.15 pm, you can just arrive at 4.15 pm. Please let Miss Sylvia know at the door if you will be attending. We are looking forward to seeing you!
Please regularly check the notice boards as well as your e-mails for further important information throughout the term.
On the notice boards you will also see what’s happening in the other classes, you may be able to help out with your talents or provide resources in one of the other classes as well as in Primary. Parents are always very welcome in our school!
If you have any question please come and speak to me, Miss Kate or our head teacher Miss Sylvia or e-mail the office any time.
We are all looking forward to a fun, sun filled summer term.
Miss Marie and Miss Kate
